The DO'S and DONT'S of HMEs

We all have different bodies, so it makes sense that some of us will have to change our HME more regularly than others. One thing all people with a laryngectomy have in common is the need to wear one 24/7. That’s why it’s important to know what to do and what not to do when it comes to looking after your HME.

Don’t rinse it

You might think you are cleaning it, but in fact, washing a HME removes the most important ingredient from its foam – the calcium chloride. This special salt is needed to humidify the air. It also prevents bacterial growth. Rinsing your HME will damage it and increase your risk of infection.

Don’t re-salt it

Even though calcium chloride is a ‘salt,’ don’t make the mistake of thinking it is the same as the table salt you have in your kitchen. This is a very different chemical compound and should never be used. It will not humidify the air and puts you at risk of contamination.

Don’t re-use it

These delicate pieces of equipment are not designed to be used more than once. As a rule, a new day means a new HME. This ensures the air you breathe is moist enough, and bacteria is less likely to grow. You should change it as often as necessary, based on how active you are and the environmental conditions.

Do replace it when it’s dirty

Your HME can get dirty or clogged because of dust in the air or any excess mucus you’re producing. If mucus is sitting on the top of the HME, you can wipe with a dry gauze. If the HME is saturated with mucous you need to replace it. Never remove the foam in your HME– this is what humidifies your lungs.
